Food Focus – A Diet Review

Sep

I love food. I love love love it.

And I think after 25 years I've finally found a way to have my cake and eat it too. I'm not a size 0 and I feel that it's part of my mission to not become a size 0 and to represent a healthy approach to fitness: strong is sexy! I once had a reader write in to me to say that she couldn't believe that I wrote about eating burgers over the weekend on my blog. Really!? I'm human and nobody should spend the rest of their life completely restricting themselves, this will only end badly one day.

My Fuel Plan

From Monday to Friday I eat 95% clean, or as close to it as I can. Lean meats, veggies, fruits, legumes, nuts and water. I don't have dairy of any kind (not even cow's milk in my tea anymore!), grains (of any kind quinoa, millet, nothing fluffy) or red meat. From Friday night until Sunday morning I loosen the reins and let myself have whatever I want. I'm not a mad binge eater on weekends. But if I'm going out for dinner I will get a burger and fries with a glass of red wine or have a bagel for breakfast on Saturday morning. This keeps me sane and allows me to enjoy food because I really truly do love it.

Typical Weekday Diet

I might be strange but I really don't find it that boring to eat the same things most days. It helps keep me on track and I don't need to spend a lot of time getting meals ready.

Breakfast:

Chocolate-avocado-milkshake-1

4/5 days I'll make this avocado chocolate shake.

Lunch:

kale

Chicken breast (I bake two huge packs on the weekend and then Matt and I take them for lunches during the week)
Kale Salad.

Dinner:

dinner

Either more chicken or I'll make fish. I love making this coconut-crusted version. So good! On the side we will have roasted butternut squash and a small salad. Oh I also LOVE making slow-roasted tomatoes to add to salads or chicken.

Other:

On coffee: I don't really drink a ton of coffee but that's just out of personal preference. I like it but I don't want to depend on it. Tea on the other hand, now there's a drink! I'll have one cup of earl grey with a dash of almond milk in the morning … ahhh love that.

I view my diet as part of my job. Monday to Friday I eat cleanly because that helps fuel me best to do my best work at my client's workouts and my own. Again, this is what works for me!! You need to find what works best for you. There really is no secret. Eat clean and you will feel great. Let yourself off the hook enough but not all the time. Balance is essential there and once you find yours you will be set in the fuel department!

do you have any suggestions for snacks?? that’s the time I find it hardest to be healthy!! I love that your suggestions are real (instead of “eat anything and be skinny with this one tip” haha)

Thanks Christa! I love apples and almond butter, or just a few (10ish) dark chocolate covered almonds if I have a big sweet tooth that day! Mostly try to drink water and eat properly during meal times. I’m not a huge grazer (unless I’m at the cottage!!)
